Petraeus' apology, McCaffrey briefing

Wednesday, September 9, 2009

AFA Members, a while back, AFA's Daily Report reported on a speech made by GEN Petraeus. [http://www.airforce-magazine.com/DRArchive/Pages/2009/August%202009/August%2020%202009/BeyondOutrageous.aspx] I received over 600 emails about the report item … all similar in nature. Later, the DR published the fact that he apologized for his remarks to the Chief of Staff of the Air Force. We have put a link up on a more extensive apology by the general. You can find it at: http://www.afa.org/edop/2009/edop_9-8-09.asp

Secondly, I want to point you to a slide briefing by GEN (R) McCaffrey [http://www.afa.org/edop/2009/McCaffrey-Challenges_Aug09.pdf]. In it the general highlights nine national security challenges facing the nation. I like the succinct nature in which he hits the main points. Caution: the piece is political in nature … but I am sure most of you can read around those parts.

For your consideration,

Mike

Too bad Gen McCraffrey had to include such blatant political language in his otherwise excellent assessment of the security issues we face. A person of his stature and position should realize that blatant political statements are not welcome by some of his readers. Got to wonder what his motive was.

I hope Gen McCaffrey was a much better general than he is at accessing blame and asserting solutions. Seems pretty good though at pointing out problems. I hope he's around and talking after his political "heroes" have a few more years at the helm.

Hard time reading around the politics!

I am a retired Army officer and a lifetime member of both AFA and AUSA. I was in Thailand during 1970-71, stationed at Army installations adjacent to Korat RTAFB and U Tapao. I witnessed daily brave Air Force personnel risking and losing their lives flying combat missions in F-4, F-105, RB-66, B-52 and other aircraft. Mocking other services has no place in the Armed Forces of the US

It has always been my contention that all "jokes" have an element of truth attached. It shows the character and, in some small sense, the belief of the one telling the joke. Regardless of to whom the joke is directed or from whom it is told it has no place among the military. "Ofspreyfan" is right-on.

I submitted an accurate comment on the 9th but was not published. It must have been too much to the point and beyond "comment moderation."(?)

McCaffrey Briefing:

As usual McCaffrey has it right. He has no choice but to acknowledge the wide array of political errors made by the previous administration; the errors were political, and they were made by politicians.
